Dr. Juan Carlos Guerra was born in El Salvador and lived there until he was 9 years old, when he moved to New York City. There he developed an interest in horses through horse racing, with Aqueduct racetrack being a 10 minute subway ride away. He completed his Bachelor of Science at Cornell University in New York. While completing his undergraduate degree Dr. Guerra worked on equine leukemia research and was part of the Men’s Polo team.
He remained at Cornell University for his veterinary education, during which he had a special interest in equine surgery and anesthesia. After graduating Dr. Guerra did a one year internship at Rhinebeck Equine, which provided a challenging surgical, medical, neonatal and ambulatory caseload. After finishing his internship Dr. Guerra remained on staff to train the new interns in anesthetic techniques and emergency medicine. Additionally he worked on an Equine Gastric Ulcer Syndrome study focusing on finding new supplements to aid in treatment of this common disease.
Following his time at Rhinebeck Equine, Dr. Guerra moved to Pennsylvania and joined Blauner, Vecchione, Buchholz & Associates, where he worked as a general equine practitioner, specializing in equine dentistry and internal medicine. While in Pennsylvania Dr. Guerra was able to work on a variety of horses including high end sport horses, western pleasure horses and backyard horses. In 2016 he moved to the Big Island of Hawai’i to join Aina Hou Animal Hospital as a mixed animal practitioner. His special interests include equine dentistry, soft tissue surgery, internal medicine and clinical pathology. Outside of work he enjoys hiking, drawing, wildlife photography, and astronomy.
